Make a Right on Acceptance

So I’m staring at myself in the mirror thinking “Well that can’t be me, when did I get this big?” My thoughts went even deeper because for the first time I realized I had to make a decision. I wasn’t happy with what I saw, it affected my confidence, my self-esteem and it wasn’t healthy.

What do you do when you get on the first step on your road to recovery?

Ps: Just in case you were wondering, the first step is acceptance. LOL!

After I accepted where I was on this journey, I decided to map out a course. The hitch now was the fact that I knew next to nothing about weight loss. I had the basic stuff down though, you know them: dieting and exercise. Well here’s the kicker: I had tried both before.

FLASH BACK! Sophomore (2nd) year of college, Second Semester (Always with this second semester. Oh, New Year - New Resolutions) I decided to visit the school gym every morning as early as 6am. Guess what? I did. Weapon of choice: ‘elliptical’. I even got my roommate in on it. We pushed each other every morning and we made it to the gym most mornings. I didn’t lose any weight that year, in fact I gained a lot of weight. So you’re probably thinking, ‘she definitely didn’t do something right’ and you are right.
Every morning after I’d burnt 200 calories (according to the monitor on my elliptical) I would reward myself with a large smoothie from this Smoothie place downstairs at the gym. My reasoning? I deserve it, plus it’s healthy; I mean it’s a friggin Smoothie! Well I was wrong, the smoothie I had, had over 900 calories in it. Not to mention the various terrible food choices I made during the day. Point is, Sophomore year was a bust for me, suffice it to say I gave up on my morning exercises before March.

In recapping my previous losses, I had to deduce what went wrong in order not to repeat the same errors. It all boiled down to one major thing, FOOD!

I love food, I mean it smells great, tastes great, it comes in all shapes and sizes and you need it to survive. So yeah, food is great; heck food is awesome. Bottom line,  I knew I could go on a strict ‘no this or that’ diet and I’d probably last a week or two (let’s keep it at a safe 1.5 weeks) before I cave and grab a slice of cake, with caramel drizzle and ice-cream on the side. I needed a *cringe* diet plan that would work long term. For me that meant I could eat all of the things I liked (granted I had to substitute some food items. E.g white rice for brown rice) but with controlled portions and just not every time I wanted it.

As time went on, I started to actually like healthy meals as opposed to junk, and I removed certain things from my diet (but we’re getting ahead of ourselves)

Step 1: Fill up Pantry.
I know, I know, I just said I could eat whatever I wanted. But I still had to mix in whole foods, vegetables and what not. So I wrote an amazing grocery list. It included Greens (Stringed Beans, Broccoli and Spinach), Protein (White meat- Chicken and Fish), Grains (Brown Rice), Yoghurt, Granola, Carrots, Fruits, Cereal (Oatmeal, Kix, Fruit & Fiber), Milk (my regular Nido Powdered), Sweet and Salty Nature Valley Bars.
My reasoning was simple; I had to take control of what I was eating. I couldn’t do that if I didn’t plan my meals ahead. Also I wanted to minimize the number of times I ate out.
A tip; what you don’t buy, you won’t eat. If I didn’t have that bar of snickers staring me in the face every time I opened my fridge, I won’t be tempted to eat it.

Step 2: Eat!
Weird huh? But that’s what dieting actually is. I learnt not to skip meals and why should I? I had a pantry full of the right stuff. I used to think skipping meals was part of a good weight loss plan, I later realised it could actually be counter-intuitive. The most important reason we eat food is that we require it to survive. So of course our ‘busy-body’ bodies will feel threatened when we stop eating. Hence the body reacts by slowing down metabolism. Simply put, it stores up more of the food you do eat as fat. Not to mention that I was more likely to over-eat when I did get around food.

Step 3: Snack Right
You remember those hunger pangs I wrote about in my previous post? Well they are so real and they always appeared at night (Night Cap!) Back then I did not have a bed-time, 10pm was the beginning of the evening. Come on its college ‘Alarm clock who?’ I’d be up till about 3am on a good day, meaning I’d be hungry at around midnight if I had dinner at 7:30pm. I quickly learnt how truly delicious carrots could be. Bugs Bunny was definitely on to something.
In my master plan, Breakfast came around 8am, snack at 11am, Lunch at 1pm, Mid-day snack and fruit at 4pm, Dinner at 7pm and Night Snack at midnight (if I was up)

Like now, I could head over to that pantry and reward myself for writing a near awesome post but no, not until it's time... Not until I am supposed to.

The goal was and is to control my hunger...

BLACKHEADS vs DARKSPOTS

NINAS’ SKINCARE ROUTINE

Welcome back ladies :-) Hope you all had an awesome week? As for me, I had a splendid one. Though I had to keep my face covered from this blessed Lagos sun ( Oh dear! )
Today’s topic *drumroll please*

BLACKHEADS vs DARKSPOTS
( every woman’s nightmare)

LETS BEGIN

“Blackheads are a feature of acne, a common skin condition that involves lesions frequently referred to as pimples, spots, zits, whiteheads or blackheads”. Now my simple definition; Blackheads are simply the outcome of a blemish that has subsided but wasn’t treated properly. For example, when we get pimples our most common remedy is to touch and pinch on it (thumbs up to the pimple busters, take a blackhead on me :-) )
Dark spots however, are not as a result of a breakout, such as pimples or rashes etc. They often show up without warning. Dark spots can be due to sunburn or excess oil applied on the face.

CAUSES OF BLACKHEADS   AND DARKSPOTS
·      Sunburn
·      Pimples (sometimes during menstrual cycle)
·      Excess oil
·      Wrong use or over use of product
·      Side effects when taking certain drugs

TREATMENTS FOR ALL KINDS OF SPOT

OPTION 1 - CAROTONE B.S.C (BLACK SPOT CORRECTOR) AND B.S.C SERUM.

So many “Caros” in Nigeria but this “Caro” works wonders! But before I forget, please do not purchase a fake as there are so many imitations in the market.  It has to be sealed when bought and should look exactly like the one pictured above.
Now the crème works but it works faster when you apply the serum first. Usually serums are applied before any moisturizer; the B.S.C serum clearly states “MAXI EFFECT” meaning you will see results faster than your regular product.
This product takes about a week before results become visible, for some people days even, all depending on the sensitivity of your skin. After 2-3 weeks its advisable that you stop using the product. (do not make it your regular cream.) But I can bet on this product, it really works and it is very cheap (nothing more than 1000 naira for both bottles)

OPTION 2 -NATURES- LIFT THE MAGIC OF SCIENCE NATURE

This product is not for the weak in heart( and I mean it ). Apply this product at night after cleansing and you will feel a sting .
I used this product for only two days and it peeled away all the ‘bad belle’. (literally) I was shocked at how quickly it worked. For instance, when I applied it on some dark circles on my face before sleeping, by morning I scratched off the crème before taking a shower and I could see my dead skin peeling off.
While using this product I felt it was sort of harsh so I decided to apply my Johnson baby moisturizer right after, to calm my skin down.

#3 CLEAR DARK SPOT CARROTTE SOAP

If you want to go all out in fighting the war against dark spots you might as well buy a correcting soap right? It works hand in hand with any of the creams I listed above and leaves your face feeling smooth(that’s a plus I noticed). But that’s about it. Creams tend to be more effective than soap so I will advise that you pay more attention to the cream.

P.S – THESE PRODUCTS ARE FOR SPOT TREATMENT. THEREFORE, ONCE SPOTS HAVE FADED AWAY YOU ARE ADVISED TO DISCONTINUE.

So guys, that’s all I have for you today. If you have questions, please comment below and I will be pleased to answer.

ON MY NEXT POST, I WILL BE GIVING MY ‘2 CENTS’ 0N SOME PRODUCTS I PURCHASED IN NIGERIA…. (YAY OR NAY GAME)

Breakfast Tropical Smoothie!

As y’all may have deduced, I love me some fruit. They work beautifully as nature’s candy, but they also blend to make this amazing things “Smoothies!”
Smoothies are vague. I mean you have a plethora of fruit to choose from. However certain fruit mixtures seem to blend better than others, thereby given you different types of Smoothies
My all-time fave is “My Very Berry Smoothie.”  But as I am in Nigeria where the berries don’t grow, I’ve come to love a tropical blend.

Note: This recipe does not contain bananas, not because they’ll be terrible, but because I’ve never liked bananas in my smoothie. So feel free to add them if that’s what you fancy.

What you need:
1)   A trustee Blender : If you also use yours to blend pepper, I’ve got you covered with instructions on how to wash you multi-purpose blender so you don’t get unwanted flavours in your mix.

Squeeze  a little bit of dish washing liquid into your blender.
Add some water.

Cover with the lid
And put it on. Let it work for a few seconds
Pour out sods (can be reused)
Rinse out your blender and I guarantee it will be fresh to use.

Back to it…
2) A sharp Knife
3) Lovely cups
4) A tray

Ingredients

Water Melon (A quarter cut)
Pineapple (Half a cut of a small one)
Apple (1 large)
Mango (1 small)
Lemon juice (1 wedge)
Ginger (half an inch piece cut)

Note: The lemon and ginger are condiments

Directions
Wash all the fruits
Chop Water melon, pineapple, apple and mango to a size that fits in the blender.
Squeeze In lemon juice
And grate Ginger (or just throw it in depending on the strength of your blender)
Turn it on!!!!
Serve in a pretty cup.

Tip: You can freeze fruits before blending them, so your smoothie is ice cold.

The Smoothie can be taken by itself or with other breakfast items. I had my smoothie with oatmeal and hard boiled eggs for instance.

Journey to Health

Ever had this experience; you wake up one morning, waddle into the bathroom, you peep at your reflection in the full mirror as you normally would. Only this time, it’s as if you’re seeing your reflection for the first time and it’s not pretty. You think to yourself
“Well that cannot be me, when did I get this big?”
Yup, that was me beginning of the year 2013, February specifically. It was the beginning of my second semester junior year in college. I had been putting on a lot of weight since 2010 (freshman 15) or in my case Freshman 50. However it was as if I had been blind to it all.

Right before my brilliant realization I had taken one of my yearly trips home to see my amazing parents. (A titbit about them) Mum has always been concerned about my weight and health(both completely synonymous to her) Dad on the other hand always made me aware that he thought I was beautiful. But this time, this trip, even he became alarmed at just how large his little girl had become.

The way you see Yourself

Like every important aspect of our lives, living healthy begins in the mind. How we view ourselves will influence how we approach life. When we view our bodies with value, we begin to care for it. I never considered myself beautiful. I didn’t think I was ugly though, I just thought I fell somewhere in the middle closer to ugly than beautiful. I considered myself one of those people you had to get to know well enough before you saw whatever beauty they possessed (progressive beauties LOL). I also thought I was fat, even before the freshman 50. It’s no wonder I added all that weight and didn’t even realize it. Stress eating, binge eating, out of boredom, celebratory eating, hunger pangs, cravings(I get those like a preggers woman). Funny thing though, I don’t eat large portions. I just ate the wrong things and at the wrong times. And my body? Well it had no external value to start with right?

"Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well." 3Jn2
I didn't see this girl...

So back to it. February 2013 I decided I was a tad too large and it was time to take action. It began with just wanting to lose weight but then it progressed as I began to appreciate and yearn for a healthier life. Fast forward to the present, I’m here in Nigeria 60lbs lighter and still pursuing a healthy life.

This blog tells the tales of this journey from here on out. While recapping valuable pieces of my weight loss journey.

I hope you stick around!

SOME THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SKIN CARE

Hello Beautiful, Intelligent, Smart women (YES! You). While you are working extremely hard to achieve whatever you dreams you have, I will be here to give you tips on how to maintain your beautiful skin. (As you know! All na packaging)

LET US BEGIN!
It is necessary to understand your skin and what your skin is begging to have. There are different skin types; Dry skin, Combination skin (a mixture of dry and oily) and Oily skin.  So, it is necessary to know what category you fall under.

I made a lot of mistakes, one of which was using the same cream I applied on my body on my face, CHAI! (MY POOR FACE) I began to have numerous dark spots and blackheads. (I will discuss the difference between dark spots and blackheads in my next post) I started to break out and I had discolorations to the extent that my face was two shades darker than the rest of my body.

My body was glowing as I mixed a bunch of organic ingredients ( I will let you guys in on that one in my next post), but my face was suffering.
As we all know or are supposed to know, our face is more sensitive than the rest of our body. Your face is likely to react to any product either positively or negatively.

I put together a skin care routine and it's in three steps
Exfoliating, Face Wash, Cleansing and Moisturizing. So here goes...

NINA'S SKIN CARE ROUTINE

EXFOLIATING

I cannot stress how important it is to exfoliate your face! Now let me explain why; Let’s say you go outside where the sun decides to bless you, add the dust and sweat! You get back home, wipe your face then wash up. And that seems like a perfectly decent beauty routine, the muck that all these elements left on your face are properly cleansed right? Wrong! All the dirt is exactly where you left it or at least 80% of it is still there.
Exfoliating your skin helps get rid of dead and dull surface layer of the skin.

WHAT DO I USE TO EXFOLIATE?

I love me some Eden Extra Whitening Apricot Face & Body Scrub. OMD! This stuff is amazing! Patience…however is key as it will take some time before you start to see results. OHH AND DON’T BE SO SCARED IT DOESN’T BLEACH hehe ;-)

But, I’ll do you guys a favor and explain what the whitening means. When you have a sunburn and you are African you develop dark spots.(not blackhead) They are round circles that resemble a “discoloration” or “patches.” Now what the “whitening” element does is that it clears these dark spots and restores your face back to your regular skin tone.
You can purchase this product in Medplus or HealthPlus if you are in Nigeria.

P.S- YOU EXFOLIATE TWICE A WEEK, NOT EVERYDAY!!

FACE WASH
WHAT DO I USE TO WASH MY FACE?

Wash your face after exfoliating with a good soap made specifically for the face and please do not use a sponge or a face towel when doing this. If you have a sensitive skin I will advise that you use this exact product because it contains less than “1% Salicylic” (which can be very harsh to the skin) it’s called Clearasil Daily Clear Refreshing Super fruit Wash.
Please and I cannot stress this enough, do not use the same soap you use for your body on your face.
You can purchase this product in Medplus or HealthPlus if you are in Nigeria… CVS or Walgreens if you reside in the U.S.

CLEANSING

Beautiful ladies let me tell you a secret! No matter how much you wash your face with a face wash (God forbid sponge) it will still have a good amount of dirt on it.

Cleansers do a good job in removing the remaining dirt. Cotton pads are more suitable for cleansers as they are wide and flat. Cleansing restores your ph balance which in return reduces the chances of you breaking out.

MOISTURIZING
Funny thing about moisturizing is that most females skip this step and go straight to makeup. We prime our faces feeling assured that we have done a great job in caring for our skin.

The problem however is, our faces are left dry after cleansing and primers do not do a good job of adding the much needed moisture to our skin.
As I mentioned earlier your skin type matters a lot and you buy a moisturizer based on your skin type; Moisturizers for oily skin helps to maintain your natural PH balance and contains shine-reducing properties.

So my darlings having said all that, I should let you know what I use(HeHe)….

most of you are wondering why Johnson baby lotion. It’s pretty simple really, this brand of baby product has a reduced amount of chemicals compared to most leading moisturizers and for my face it does a wonderful job of keeping it smooth and soft. I tend to use my Johnson when I break out. If you are new to the whole skincare routine I would advise that you start with Johnson's baby cream since it isn’t harsh on the skin.

As for the Olay I use it simply because of the spf 15(sun protector factor) although I would advise that you get a higher spf ( such as 30 or 50) if you live in Nigeria or anywhere with a hot climate.

THANK YOU DOLLS FOR TAKING TIME TO READ! PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR MY NEXT POST : )
